The Controller's Office is pleased to announce that DHR's City University has partnered with City College of San Francisco to offer Municipal Government Accounting during the Spring 2008 semester. The class will meet weekly on Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm, beginning January 17, 2008 and continue until May 22, 2008. Class sessions will be held at the College's downtown campus located at 4th and Mission Streets, easily reached by both MUNI and BART.
Below is a brief description of the class and information about how class costs might be funded. Attached are DHR's detailed Enrollment Instructions and their Supervisor Approval Form which is used to secure tuition funding as explained below.
Space in this class is limited to 35 students total and is open to anyone meeting the prerequisite, including the general public. Interested City staff should enroll as soon as possible by following the attached instructions. (The prerequisite is an understanding of financial accounting consistent with a 3 unit introductory accounting course.)
Municipal Government Accounting (ACCT 56) is a 3 unit class, semester long class. It meets on Thursdays, from 4pm to 7pm. Start date: January 17th, 2008. End date: May 22, 2008. Instructor: Daniel Johnson of City College staff.
Mr. Johnson has taught government accounting at City College for many years. Next semester, for the first time, Controller's Office staff will join him in presenting this class, teaching both the theory and the practice of government accounting and reporting. Throughout the semester, examples and exercises from the City and County of San Francisco will be used to illustrate how government accounting theory and standards are actually implemented. In addition, experts from City departments will be invited to discuss select topics (budgeting, bonds or grants, for example) and to explain how accounting and financial information is used to help make decisions about various CCSF operations. This "real world" view is designed to supplement and enhance the text book used for the course.
